An EV or hybrid vehicle may require less routine engine maintenance than a conventional petrol or diesel vehicle, but that does not mean it is maintenance-free. High-voltage components, braking systems, tyres, suspension, cooling systems, the 12V electrical system and increasingly complex electronic control modules still require regular inspection.
At Doyen Auto Services in Dumbarton, our EV & Hybrid Health Check provides an entry-level assessment of the vehicle’s mechanical, electrical and high-voltage systems. It is ideal for routine preventative maintenance, investigating minor concerns or obtaining a clearer picture of the condition of a recently purchased electric or hybrid vehicle.
A key part of the inspection is the high-voltage system. Where safely accessible and appropriate, we visually inspect relevant high-voltage cables, connectors and associated components for signs of physical damage, deterioration, contamination or other abnormalities.
Our EV & Hybrid Health Check can include:
* High-voltage system visual inspection * HV cable and connector condition checks * Full vehicle diagnostic scan * Battery Management System (BMS) fault-code checks * High-voltage battery system fault assessment * Inverter and power-electronics diagnostics * On-board charger fault checks * DC/DC converter diagnostics * Electric drive system fault-code checks * 12V battery condition assessment * Brake system inspection * Tyre condition and pressure checks * Suspension and steering inspection * Exterior lighting checks * Wiper and washer-system inspection * Cooling-system visual checks * Dashboard warning-light assessment
Modern EVs can contain dozens of interconnected electronic control modules. A basic OBD2 reader may only provide access to a limited selection of powertrain information and may not communicate with manufacturer-specific systems.
We use professional diagnostic equipment capable of interrogating multiple vehicle modules where supported. This allows us to investigate systems such as the Battery Management System, inverter, electric drive unit, charging system, ABS, body control, airbag/SRS, thermal management and other electronic systems.
The conventional 12V battery is another important part of an EV that is easily overlooked. Even though propulsion comes from the high-voltage battery, the 12V electrical system is still responsible for powering and activating many of the vehicle’s control systems. A deteriorating 12V battery can therefore produce unexpected warning messages, communication faults or starting/activation problems.
Brake systems also require regular inspection. Regenerative braking can reduce conventional friction-brake usage, but reduced use can sometimes contribute to corrosion or sticking components. Brake discs, pads, calipers and associated components should therefore still be inspected periodically.

Tyres are equally important. The combination of vehicle weight and immediate electric-motor torque can place significant demands on tyres, making correct pressures, tread condition and even wear particularly important.
Our EV Health Check is focused on preventative inspection and early fault detection. Finding developing problems before they become major failures can reduce repair costs, improve reliability and provide greater confidence in the condition of the vehicle.
Where a fault or abnormality is identified, we can recommend further testing or repair rather than replacing components based on fault codes alone.
