NOx sensors measure the level of nitrogen oxide in your vehicle's exhaust gases. Modern diesel vehicles typically have two — one before and one after the SCR catalytic converter (the AdBlue system). When a NOx sensor fails, it can trigger the engine management light, AdBlue warnings, and in some cases, the dreaded countdown to engine restart lockout.
New NOx sensors from the dealer are expensive — often £300-£600 per sensor, and some vehicles have two or three of them. Before committing to that kind of spend, it's worth having the system properly diagnosed. Not every NOx-related fault code actually means the sensor has failed — sometimes it's a wiring issue, a software glitch, or a problem elsewhere in the emissions system that's causing incorrect readings.
