Lambda sensors — also called oxygen sensors or O2 sensors — measure the amount of oxygen in your exhaust gases. This information is used by the ECU to adjust the air-fuel mixture for optimal combustion. Most vehicles have at least two lambda sensors: one before the catalytic converter (upstream) and one after (downstream).
When a lambda sensor fails or becomes sluggish, the ECU can't properly control the air-fuel mixture. This leads to poor fuel economy, increased emissions, rough running, and often an engine management light. A faulty lambda sensor is also one of the most common reasons for failing the MOT emissions test.
