The AdBlue system, also known as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), is an emissions control system fitted to most modern Euro 6 diesel vehicles. Its purpose is to reduce harmful Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions produced during diesel combustion.
The system stores AdBlue (a mixture of 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionised water) in a separate tank. During normal engine operation, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) precisely injects AdBlue into the exhaust stream before the SCR catalyst. The heat from the exhaust converts the AdBlue into ammonia, which reacts with harmful NOx gases and converts them into harmless nitrogen and water vapour before they exit the exhaust.
When all components are operating correctly, the process is automatic and requires little driver intervention other than periodically topping up the AdBlue tank.
