After an accident or collision — even a relatively minor impact — a vehicle’s airbag control module, also known as the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) module, can record crash data, event information and permanent fault codes. This is a normal safety function designed to preserve critical information about the collision and, depending on the vehicle manufacturer and module type, may place the SRS system into a crash-locked or deployment-recorded state.

Once crash data has been stored, the vehicle may display a persistent airbag/SRS warning light, stored internal fault codes or communication-related faults. In some cases, the vehicle may also fail its safety-system checks until the underlying issue has been correctly diagnosed and rectified.

Where the module is electronically serviceable and the vehicle manufacturer’s system permits a reset, clearing the stored crash data can restore the SRS module to an operational state without unnecessarily replacing an otherwise functional unit.
