Airbag ECU (SRS Module) Testing, Repair & Crash Data Reset
Understanding the Airbag ECU (SRS Control Module)
The Airbag ECU, also known as the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) Control Module, Airbag Control Unit (ACU) or Restraint Control Module (RCM), is one of the most important safety computers in your vehicle.
Its primary role is to continuously monitor the entire airbag and occupant restraint system. During every journey, it receives information from multiple sensors throughout the vehicle and determines whether airbags and seatbelt pretensioners should deploy during a collision.
The Airbag ECU constantly communicates with components including:
* Front impact sensors * Side impact sensors * Rear impact sensors (where fitted) * Rollover sensors * Seat occupancy sensors * Seatbelt buckle switches * Seatbelt pretensioners * Driver and passenger airbags * Side airbags * Curtain airbags * Knee airbags * Steering wheel clock spring * Crash sensors * CAN Bus communication network
Within milliseconds of detecting a severe collision, the Airbag ECU analyses the impact and activates the appropriate safety devices to help protect the occupants.
If the module detects a fault at any time, it stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) and illuminates the Airbag (SRS) Warning Light on the dashboard. In many cases, this means part or all of the Supplemental Restraint System may no longer operate correctly until the fault has been repaired.
Common Airbag ECU Faults
Like any electronic control module, the Airbag ECU can develop faults over time due to age, electrical issues or accident damage.
Common failures include:
* Internal processor failure * EEPROM memory corruption * Crash data stored after an accident * Water or moisture damage * Burnt electronic components * Damaged power supply circuits * CAN Bus communication faults * Corroded PCB tracks * Voltage spike damage * Reverse polarity damage * Short circuit damage * Failed capacitors or integrated circuits * Damaged connectors or pins * Software corruption * Intermittent internal faults
These faults can cause the Airbag Warning Light to remain permanently illuminated, even after damaged airbags or seatbelts have been replaced.
Symptoms of a Faulty Airbag Module
You may notice one or more of the following:
* Airbag warning light permanently on * "Check Airbag System" message * SRS warning displayed on dashboard * Airbag fault codes that cannot be cleared * Crash data stored * Communication failure with the Airbag ECU * Seatbelt pretensioner faults * Occupancy sensor faults * Internal control module failure * No communication during diagnostics
Driving with the SRS warning light illuminated means the vehicle's supplemental restraint system may not function as intended in the event of a collision.

What Is Crash Data?
When airbags or seatbelt pretensioners deploy, the Airbag ECU records permanent Crash Data inside its memory.
This information is intentionally stored by the manufacturer to prevent the module from being reused without inspection.
Even after replacing deployed airbags, pretensioners and impact sensors, the vehicle may continue displaying the Airbag Warning Light because the crash data remains stored in the module.
Our Airbag ECU Repair Service
At Doyen Auto Services Ltd, we specialise in professional Airbag ECU diagnostics, testing and electronic repair.
Depending on the fault, we may be able to repair the original module rather than replacing it, helping customers save hundreds of pounds compared with purchasing a new unit.
Our services include:
* Complete SRS system diagnostics * Airbag ECU bench testing * Crash data reset * EEPROM data repair * Internal circuit board repair * Component-level electronic repairs * Power supply circuit repair * CAN Bus circuit repair * Water damage restoration * Corrosion removal and PCB repair * Software recovery and reprogramming * Diagnostic fault code clearing * Final system verification
Every module is carefully tested before and after repair to verify correct operation.
Why Repair Instead of Replace?
In many cases, repairing the original Airbag ECU provides a faster and more cost-effective solution.
Benefits include:
* Significant cost savings compared with replacement * Retains the vehicle's original module * No need to source a matching replacement * Avoids unnecessary programming in many applications * Faster turnaround * Environmentally friendly by reducing electronic waste
Replacement Airbag ECUs often require coding, configuration or immobiliser synchronisation before they will function correctly, adding further expense.
Advanced Electronic Repair
Our workshop is equipped with professional diagnostic and electronic repair equipment, allowing us to carry out component-level repairs where appropriate.
This includes:
* EEPROM programming * Flash memory programming * BGA and SMD component replacement * PCB track repair * Bench power testing * Communication testing * CAN Bus diagnostics * Data verification * Module cloning (where supported)
Every original module is backed up before programming or memory repairs are carried out.

If your Airbag Warning Light is on or your Airbag ECU has developed a fault, we'll diagnose the problem accurately and recommend the most cost-effective repair solution.
Important Safety Disclaimer
The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is a critical vehicle safety system. Any diagnosis, repair or programming should only be carried out by suitably trained technicians using professional diagnostic and programming equipment.
We always recommend investigating and repairing the root cause of any SRS fault before returning a vehicle to service. Airbag modules are only released after appropriate testing and verification to help ensure the system operates as intended.
