The EGR valve is one of the most problematic components on modern diesel engines. Over time, soot and carbon from the exhaust gas that passes through it builds up into a thick, tar-like residue. This can cause the valve to stick open or closed, restrict airflow through the intake manifold, and trigger fault codes and warning lights.
EGR valve cleaning is the process of removing this carbon build-up to restore proper valve operation. At our Rutherglen workshop, we remove the EGR valve (and often the intake manifold), clean them thoroughly using specialist chemicals and methods, and refit everything. This restores proper airflow and valve function without the cost of replacement parts.
Many garages will simply recommend a new EGR valve, which can cost £200-£600+ for the part alone. In most cases, a proper clean is all that's needed to get it working correctly again. Of course, if the valve mechanism itself is physically damaged, we'll let you know — but that's rare. The problem is almost always carbon build-up.
